How to wear brooches, and why they are my favorite accessory.

Not your grandmas brooches…

Unless she was very fashionable. And if she wore brooches, I’m assuming she was! So wait, maybe these ARE your grandmas brooches! Does she sell on Poshmark?

Brooches are my favorite accessory ever.

They are colorful, classy fun, and versatile.

But Carolyn, you say, How is a brooch going to work for me? What does it have that my other jewelry is missing?

Well, I’ll tell you:

Brooches can add a great pop of color and whimsy to so many outfits!

You can pin them on blazers, button down tops, (at the neck or on the collar). Pin one on the neckline of a sweater, or on a denim jacket. On hats, shoes, scarves, headbands, even backpacks!
They can mix with your other accessories to pull an outfit together and give it that polished look!

They can add a contrasting pop of color to a monotone outfit. They can replace bracelets, or clunky or long necklaces that seem to just get in the way. If you cannot wear earrings (like me) they can give you another way to add some sparkle or color to your outfits.

I began wearing brooches when I was in high school. There is a wonderful little second hand/consignment shop in my home town where I used to get most of them from called “Rummage in The Park”. Once my friends knew I collected them they would get them for me when they found them at yard sales or thrift shops.

I was always looking for something to add some interest to my jackets, since in MN they are usually covering up the rest of your outfit! 😂

As the years went by most of my collection got lost in transit, and I stopped wearing them for many years while my son was young and I was working a job where I didn’t really dress up at all. But now they are back in my life with a vengeance!

My favorite place to shop for brooches is on Poshmark, with thrift stores coming in at a close second, and then antique stores (they can get a little pricey). Some retail stores still sell brooches but I have a hard time shopping retail for most things! Now, if you are looking for no flaws and perfection you may want to try retail first. I personally am usually looking for something vintage with a little character. I am not opposed to a few marks scratches, or small paint chips if the overall quality and function of the brooch is good. Most reliable online sellers will show multiple pictures of all “flaws” including the back so you can see what condition the clasp is in.
